Ride the Wave
Emotion: Anxiety
Be aware and notice the wave of anxiety
In a non-judgmental manner, step back and recognize what you are feeling
Name the emotion that you are feeling
‘I am feeling anxious’
Rather than, ‘I am anxious.’ Anxiety does not define a person
Experience the emotion
Where do you feel the anxiety in your body?
‘I feel the anxiety in my stomach.’
‘My heart is racing.’
You are not your anxiety
No emotion is final or forever
Do not hold onto the anxiety
Accept the emotion
Do not judge the anxiety
Step back from it
Do not brush it away or try to control it
It is what it is
Remember all emotions are temporary
Do not react in the moment
Anxiety is a powerful wave trying to pull you off your surfboard
Think of times you had with positive emotions because a new emotion (wave) will be with you soon
Breathe
Release the anxiety
Exhale
Do not fight the wave!
Keep practicing – Surfing takes time to learn!
